It's disturbing that so many sites, people, and authors 'sell spells'

So, I Google "wiccan spells" and get around 2,310,000 results. I click the first couple of links and decided to stop. It is completely disturbing that so many sites, people, and authors 'sell spells'. I check Overture and sure enough, "Wiccan Spells" gets searched alot. So now I am becoming even more disturbed by just how many people are actually looking for these spells that the other side of the fence seems more than happy to share or sell to them.

One site claims "Free wicca spells - real and easy! Includes witchcraft, white, magic, voodoo, love and money. A place to publish your potions, lotions and concoctions for everyone to share. Use these spells at your own risk." Humph! Wow. I guess I am not so amazed why so many non-Wiccan's think we are one big joke.

Well, let me say clearly here that such posts, offerings, and claims are very poor examples of Wiccan attitudes regarding magic, spellcraft, and our practices. These types of representations definitely create a very distorted and sad image of what we actually believe and observe. Now, I cannot speak for every Wiccan in the world, but I can speak for myself and I have to say that I would never share my "spells", this is not my Wicca, and I seriously question the authors of these "spells" in respect to their understanding, sincerity, and integrity.

For non-Wiccans who might be searching these magical secrets out... STOP. You will not find them in a book, online, or by CD shipped COD from Salem. It won't happen. Put your wallet back into your pocket and seek out a seasoned and honestly devoted Wiccan to discover how to begin exploring these mysteries. We are neither fools nor are we bent on making fools of others. Take this word of warning at face value - These perpetrators are a plague on our communities and the only magical knowledge I suspect they hold is the formula by which they separate a sucker from their money.

The knowledge of Wiccan philosophy and magical practice is fairly in the public domain in one fashion or another. In most cases sincere authors, teachers, and authorities will openly discuss our beliefs concerning magical action and how one might go about applying those ideas, but never would they give someone "spells" and claim their effectiveness through simply acting out whatever instructions might be given. Those that claim otherwise are trying to goad you into being the next sucker; Or if they sincerely believe the opposite to be true, they themselves have fallen victim to some sad and sadistic lie, in which case I would hope in reading this they might reconsider the quality of their own source inspirations and teachings.

Wicca tends to bear the brunt of a poorly represented global community as is and these spell peddlers don't do much to help the situation. Now, I won't suppose that any bit or length or rattling I might do will change that fact, but at least here I can seed some other possibility in the minds of those who don't know or who might begin to question whether they actually know or not.

I am not sure how I really feel about the whole idea. A part of me says that if someone is foolish enough to buy into such trash, so be it, have a good time with it. The other part of me is disappointed, saddened, and ashamed by our larger community for in so many ways letting this type of "representation go unchecked". But again, I am not sure that we have to do anything about it at all, and maybe my own minor discomfort is simply an expression of some still lingering want to have my own Path regarded with respect and valid recognition in the eyes of the world. If the last be the case, I suppose this post isn't very important at all, because as a Wiccan - of apparently different persuasion - I am not really concerned if others know the reality of what we are and what we might believe. It is for us and those who sincerely seek out the Craft of the Wise, and we will leave others to believe what they wish of us.

Again, it is late, and I am tired... another possibly unnecessary post ;o)
