Approaching the Gate.

"Approaching the Gate" is a reference to the first steps involved in an operation of contacting a Garden power. It is neither a complicated or difficult practice and can be mastered with ease. Basically it simply involves preparing the mind and focus for the meditative actions that will follow employing the magical imagination.

It begins with any technique of relaxation. Use what works for you. Most of us find rhythmic breathing and methods of instant relaxation to be sufficient, but this is a part of the process we do not want to rush. We definitely want to be relaxed and focused before moving on.

Next we close our eyes and imagine some secret and sacred space, known (created) only by us. This could by a mystical grove, some ancient temple, a hidden cave, or even a magical chamber floating through the stars. The point is that this is your magical space, your starting point for every adventure through the Garden Gate.

Once we have this place firmly constructed by the magical thought we ourselves enter into the scene. Facing what we would perceive to be the northern quadrant we proceed to Cast a Circle and Invoke the Elemental Rulers as we are accustomed to by our own ritual forms and traditions. If you are not a Wiccan or versed in earth-based ritual forms, I might suggest doing a search for Circle Casting and Invoking the Elements. Even better would be to already be comfortable with ritual practice, but even though the Garden of Elements was intended to be a Wiccan system of theurgical magic, it is certainly not limited to use only by WIccans or by specific ritual disciplines.

Once the Circle is Cast and the Quarters have been called in this place, if you so desire, now would be an appropriate point to Draw Down the Divine. It is not necessary, since we work principally with elemental and devic type forces and intelligences through the Garden, but some feel most comfortable operating under the presence of the Gods. So be it.

From here you simply face the quarter of the originating force and trace the Gate Key in the air before you as you state the purpose for opening the Gate. Once done, the key should dissolve the scene before you to reveal the "section" of the Garden you desire to visit. Step through and allow the journey to unfold.
