One of the biggest ways people get information nowadays is TV. This isn’t great, because TV isn’t usually that accurate. I’m thinking about shows like Charmed, or Bewitched. People watch that and think that they understand what magic is and how real life Wiccans or witches practice.
So I think the Wiccan community really needs a documentary about us. What is Wicca? What do Wiccans believe? How do we practice? What are we like? There could be interviews with scholars and long-time practitioners, and there could be surveys of ‘Wiccans on the street’ about their beliefs and rituals.
Originally, I had the idea of doing this myself once I get out of college (only a few years from now). But it looks more and more like I will have other things going on (graduate school, work, possibly peace corps for a bit). And to tell the truth, I don’t think I have enough follow-up to go through with a project this size. I’m just not that good at completing things.
So now I turn to you, the general public. Hopefully one day I will find the energy to go through with this, but as long as I’m not, maybe one of you can. You don’t have to be Wiccan, or even pagan, as long as you have an open mind and can present things in an unbiased light. Just the facts, as they say. This might turn out to be my post-retirement project, but I would be thrilled if by that time documentaries on Wicca were commonplace.


Now that I’ve said that, here are some suggestions I’ve thought up so far for a documentary. Obviously if anyone actually takes this idea and runs with it you can make all the changes you want. These are just ideas:

- Definition of Wicca: earth-based religion, embraces magic etc. Maybe include some statistics.

- History: A short history of neo-paganism, Gardner, etc.

- Basic rules and redes: Law of return and Wiccan rede. Maybe talk to people about what the rules mean to them, and how they incorporate them into their lives.

- Holidays: Explanation of esbats vs. sabbats, and solstices and equinoxes vs. cross quarter days. Wheel of the year, explaining each holiday.

- Rituals: When they're done - esbats and sabbats. Maybe have a basic outline of a ritual as a voice over, while showing footage of an actual ritual. Also, have interviews with various coven/tradition heads.
